7 Beautiful Churches To Visit In Luzon Island, Philippines

POSTED ON JULY 5, 2017

In terms of religion, the Philippines is predominantly Roman Catholic as a result of the Spanish colonization. You will find many churches throughout the islands and the following are, in our opinion, the most beautiful historic churches in the Luzon Island that we visited.

St. Augustine Church of Paoay

Paoay Church is located in Illocos Norte. In 1973, this beautiful church was declared to be a National Cultural Treasure by the government of the Philippines. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is no wonder why we were in awe when we arrived to see this magnificent building. This is a great example of what Baroque architecture looks like showing the artistic style of the dramatic and distinct facade of the exteriors. Although it is quite an old church, it has survived many typhoons and earthquakes. The interior is just as beautiful and is a true gem to the city. Definitely a church to visit!

Bantay Church

Bantay Church, also known as Saint Augustine Church in Illocos Sur, is the oldest church in the area. It was originally built in 1590 and re-built in the 1950s after World War II. This was a very interesting church as its structure was inspired by neo-gothic and Spanish architecture.

San Augustin Church in Manila

The most beautiful church in Manila has to be San Agustin Church. The interior design is so elegant with crystal chandeliers and amazing symmetry. You will not get tired of admiring the architectural designs of this pretty church. This is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site under Baroque Churches of the Philippines. UNESCO is the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization. UNESCO chooses different sites throughout the world that have an importance to culture, science, or history.

Quiapo Church

This crowded church is popular as it is the minor basilica and the home of the black Nazarene that many Filipinos are devoted to due to the many miracles they’ve had. It is located in the Quiapo District in busy Manila. Evening masses are crowded even during the week but it is a nice place to be to experience the faith that brings people here. It is a beautiful church depicting the Baroque style of the typical Catholic church.

Cathedral in Manila

This is one of the most admired cathedrals in the Philippines. It is located in the Intramuros District in Manila. It is a massive church and a very interesting historic building. We recommend you check it out.

Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto

This cute little chapel and grotto is located in Baguio. To get to the chapel, you must climb 252 steps. The cool Baguio weather helps accomplish this challenge. The views from the top are spectacular and you get to see the many devoted Catholics that constantly visit the beautiful image of Our Lady of Lourdes.

Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary of Manaoag

We decided to visit the popular ivory image of the Virgin Mary in Manaoag, Pangasinan. During Easter, the locals have a pilgrimage at night that consists of walking from their town of origin to Manaoag. We embarked on this five hour walking journey along with the many other devoted Catholics and found this experience to be very insightful. Locals from the passing towns were ready to provide water, coffee, food, and first aid to those in need. It was a beautiful experience for both of us and we were glad we did it.
