Tejate
Everyone who visits Oaxaca must try Tejate. This traditional drink from the prehispanic era used by Zapotecs is so refreshing and unique that will most likely have you coming back for more. It’s Rosy’s favorite!
Tejate is made from maize and cacao beans, flor de cacao, mamey pits, and water. The ingredients are mixed and the flor de cacao rise to the top making a foamy paste. When served, a sugar syrup is added to sweeten the drink. Tejate is served cold.
You can find Tejate stands all over the city. Our favorite place was in Mercado Benito Juarez where you can sit and enjoy Tejate in a colorful jicara, a coconut shell.
Aguas Frescas
Agua frescas are found throughout Oaxaca. Be sure to stop and try the different exotic flavors and stay hydrated.
You can find the typical horchata water everywhere. For a cool twist, try the combination of horchata with cactus fruit. We absolutely loved it!
Chilacayota is another popular agua fresca in Oaxaca. The ingredients used are chilacayota (black seed squash), pineapple, cinnamon, brown sugar loaf, and lemon peels.
There are many more agua fresca flavors to explore so give it a try!
Water
Bottled water will help you stay cool at all times. We recommend carrying bottled water with you everywhere you go.
