COSTA RICA – Come Face to Face with the Vampire Bats at Venado Caves
Come Face to Face With The Vampire Bats At The Venado Caves
POSTED ON JANUARY 30, 2019When you need a break from exploring the above ground nature and beauty of Costa Rica, head over to the underground caves in Arenal for some exciting spelunking. According to our awesome guide, Venado Caves were formed about 15 million years ago under sea level. That’s just a cool fact to encourage you to add this to your adventure list.
When visiting caves, you enter at your own risk, so it is important that you take precautions to stay safe during your adventure. Don’t forget to bring your water shoes! It is very slippery inside the caves and your water shoes will save you from falling.
You will get wet and muddy in the caves no matter what. You will be provided with helmets and flashlights to attach to your helmets as it is dark and narrow in some areas of the cave.
Our spelunking adventure took about two hours. We had to hike for a few minutes to reach the entrance of the caves. Once inside the cave, we could spot the many vampire bats and spiders that reside in there.
Hopefully, you are not claustrophobic as there are many areas where you only have a tiny space to crawl and push your body through small holes.
Honestly, it was a bit scary to remember that earthquakes are quite common in Costa Rica while being inside the caves. Maybe this is why you enter at your own risk! But fortunately, no earthquake occurred and we had an amazing underground adventure!
